Run Meta and Google ad campaigns with AI on a small budget

The short answer

On a small budget, AI is best used to prepare an ad campaign, not to run it alone: it studies the ads that work in your trade, writes several hooks, produces visuals and drafts a plan. You pick the network (Google to catch demand that exists, Meta to create it), a budget you can afford to lose, and one measurable goal. Google never charges more than 30.4 times your average daily budget in a month.

We make Extra, an AI agent platform, so this article is written by an interested party. Facts about other tools and about the law come from the sources listed at the bottom, as of the date shown.

What can AI do for a small business ad campaign?

AI is very good at the prep work of an ad campaign and much weaker at judgment. It can study your competitors’ ads, write ten hooks in five minutes, produce images and short videos, and draft a plan. What it does not know is what a customer in your town will pay, or whether your offer beats the shop down the street.

The ad platforms are already full of AI. At Google, Performance Max is a goal-based campaign type that runs your ads across YouTube, Display, Search, Discover, Gmail and Maps from a single campaign, mixing your text, images and videos into ads for each placement. Your job is no longer to tune a hundred settings; it is to feed the machine good material and one clear goal.

Meta or Google Ads: where should you start?

Start with Google if people already search for your service, and with Meta (Facebook, Instagram) if you need to make them want it. A plumber, a locksmith or an HVAC contractor answers demand that exists: someone types “AC repair near me” and wants it fixed today. A bakery launching brunch, a florist before Mother’s Day or a new yoga studio has to reach people who were not searching for anything.

  • Google Ads (search): existing demand, urgent needs, local services, quotes.
  • Meta Ads: visual products, launches, events, seasonal offers.
  • Both: only once one already works and you have the budget to test the other.

How much should you budget for a first campaign?

Budget an amount you are willing to lose entirely, over a period you set in advance. A first campaign is a test: it teaches you what attracts customers, not necessarily how to make each one profitable.

At Google, the budget is set per day, but it is an average. Per Google Ads Help, a campaign can spend up to twice its average daily budget on a given day, but you are never charged more than 30.4 times that amount for the month. Google’s own example: with a $10 daily budget, the most you would pay is $304. For Performance Max, Google suggests up to three budget levels with a forecast, the lowest being the minimum it recommends.

A worked example for a locksmith: $15 a day for 30 days, so $456 at most. If the campaign brings six calls and two become jobs with $250 of margin each, it paid for the test. If it brings no calls after three weeks, the problem is the ad, the offer or the landing page, not the budget.

How do you prepare a campaign with AI, step by step?

  1. One goal, only one: calls, quote requests or bookings. Not “awareness.”
  2. Tracking before spending: make sure a call or a form counts as a conversion. Google’s guidance is to define the conversion actions you care about first.
  3. Research what works: ads that have run for weeks in your trade are the ones making money.
  4. Three to five very different hooks, rather than twenty versions of one idea.
  5. Real visuals: photos of your jobs, your shop, your team. Generated images are a supplement.
  6. Launch, then wait: new ads go through a review that takes “a few days,” per Google’s Performance Max guide, and the bid strategy stays in learning for a while. Change nothing during that time.
  7. A review on a fixed date: cost per lead, leads that became customers, decision.

The most expensive mistake is not a bad ad. It is a campaign that runs for three months while nobody checks whether the calls are coming in.

Which mistakes should you avoid when AI writes your ads?

  • False promises: “there in 30 minutes” if that is not true. AI writes what grabs attention, not what is accurate.
  • Visuals that do not look like you: a customer who clicks for a magazine kitchen and finds something else does not sign.
  • Too many audiences at once: on a small budget, one area and one offer are enough.
  • Changing things every day: each significant edit restarts the learning period.
  • Forgetting the landing page: a good ad sent to a slow or confusing page wastes the budget. Our post on building a website with AI gives the speed targets.

How does Extra help with ad campaigns?

At Extra (hello-extra.com), the AI agent platform for small businesses, this is the role of Jade, the marketing agent. Jade watches your competitors’ ads, searches Meta’s Ad Library for the ads that work in your niche, then prepares a video ad: a script with three hooks, a costed storyboard and the generated shots, bundled as a package ready to launch paused. She also writes the campaign plan and the ad copy.

What Jade does not do yet: the final edit and pushing the campaign into your Meta or Google Ads account. You launch it, which keeps you in control of the spend. If you want a tool that manages your bids continuously, an agency or the platform’s own automated bidding is a better fit. For the organic content that goes with your ads, see how to post on Instagram consistently as a one-person business.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a first campaign run?

Set a length before you start, for example three or four weeks, and do not judge it before the learning period ends. A campaign stopped after three days teaches you nothing; a campaign left running for three months without a review costs you a lot.

Do AI-generated visuals work in ads?

They work for testing angles and hooks, and for products that are easy to show. For a contractor or a local shop, real photos of your work are more credible: customers want to see what you actually do, not a perfect image.

Do I need an agency for a small budget?

Rarely at first. An agency’s fixed fee weighs heavily on a few hundred dollars of ad spend. It becomes worth it once a campaign works and you want to scale spending without giving up your evenings.

What should I measure first?

Cost per lead: what you spent divided by the calls, forms or bookings the campaign brought. Then check how many of those leads became paying customers. Clicks and impressions are only useful to diagnose a problem, not to decide whether the campaign worked.

Key takeaways

  • AI prepares (research, hooks, visuals, plan); you set the budget, the goal and the truth of the offer.
  • Google for existing demand, Meta to create it.
  • Google never charges more than 30.4 times your average daily budget in a month.
  • Track conversions before spending, and leave the campaign alone while it learns.
  • Review on a fixed date, with numbers.
